One of our most ambitious projects to date was created in partnership with Mortenson, one of North America’s leading builders and developers.
For more than six years, Mortenson has led construction efforts on the new Richard M. Schulze Surgical and Critical Care Center at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis, Minnesota. As the largest private hospital in the Twin Cities, Abbott Northwestern serves more than 200,000 patients and families annually and has been a cornerstone of the Minneapolis community since 1882.
The new Richard M. Schulze Surgical and Critical Care Center represents the largest expansion project in Allina Health’s history. The 10-story, 620,000-square-foot facility will help define the next generation of patient care when it opens to patients in 2026.
To commemorate the completion of this landmark healthcare project, Mortenson partnered with Brick Works to create a custom microscale replica of the new facility.
Bringing a Landmark Building to Life
Capturing the scale and architectural detail of a 10-story hospital expansion required a highly customized approach.
The finished building kit consisted of 708 individual pieces engineered to recreate the distinctive design of the Richard M. Schulze Surgical and Critical Care Center. Custom pad printing was applied to large exterior panels on multiple sides of the model to accurately represent the building’s expansive glass windows and architectural features.
To create a premium experience worthy of the project itself, each kit was packaged in a full-color custom box and included a QR code linking to digital building instructions. The final instruction guide contained 167 detailed building steps, allowing recipients to recreate the facility piece by piece.
The result was more than a commemorative gift—it became a hands-on celebration of six years of planning, coordination, engineering, and construction excellence.
